Everyone can benefit from personal development coaching. Maybe you want to be more successful in your job or you feel like your life is in a rut and you have no idea how to turn it around. People from all walks of life take advantage of personal development coaching so that they can improve themselves and their lives. Personal development is your road to overall well-being through self improvement techniques and behavior modification. People who do personal development greatly benefit because they can enjoy their lives in a very conscious way just from improving their circumstances and improving themselves.

When you have your list of goals you want to achieve you will work with your coach to reach those goals. You will find out what mental blocks you have that are keeping you from moving forward. Your coach can help you get rid of your false beliefs and replace them with the truth. You coach will have resources that you can utilize that will help you reach your goals even faster.

You and your coach will devise a plan which has some life building exercises. Your coach will point out places that you can improve certain skills and tell you were all your strong points are so you can pull strength from them. Personal development is not about dwelling on just the negative aspects of your life but your strengths too.  When you begin implementing your plan you may find that you hit some walls but that is what your coach is for.  They will help you see why the wall is there and how you can tear that wall down and keep moving forward towards your goal.  Your coach will be a very valuable asset during this process and will give you the motivation you need so that you will see things through to the end.

Finding Your Voice In Leadership Skill Development http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/finding-your-voice-in-leadership-skill-development.html http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/finding-your-voice-in-leadership-skill-development.html#comments Sun, 21 Aug 2011 05:06:35 +0000 Nick Cavalera http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/finding-your-voice-in-leadership-skill-development.html Do you have an assertive voice or a wimpy, quite voice that causes your friends, family and business associates to often tell you to get a grip and stop acting like a scared, little mouse?

You may not be that over the top, yet “finding your voice” of determination and assertiveness is key to becoming a success, literally and figuratively. Being assertive doesn’t mean being aggressive. Those are two different things. One is taking a stand and the other is being a bully.

Is it difficult for you to assert yourself out of fear of what may happen? Are you afraid the other person my become angry and yell at you? It has happened of course, but usually the person who does lose it and becomes angry is either a bully or just masking the person they really are; another scared, little mouse who learned how to roar simply to intimidate.

Assertiveness is an indication of your self-esteem and self-assurance in your identity as an individual. When you lack assertiveness your career and life can be affected in a negative way. It can impact your career prospects and the quality of the life you live. It’s important to build your leadership skill development. If you are always a follower and never a Leader, success will be nearly impossible.

If you are someone who is not assertive and believe you’re alone, think again. Go to your computer and “Google” how to be assertive and you will find over 1,300,000 results on that one subject. So you have a whole tribe of people just like you out there searching for the answer to find their “inner warrior.”
A great place to start is to begin by recording yourself speaking.

With permission from a few good friends, you can call them on the phone and record how you interact and communicate with them and listen to it over and over to really get an idea of how you sound to others. Then you can stand in front of a mirror, have a script in hand and pretend you’ re giving a lecture to a group of people.

Yes, initially it will be for a group of one, (yourself) yet as you become more self-assured and proficient you might consider giving a talk about a subject you know enough about in front of a small group of people at your home, your church or club.

Pay attention to how you use your voice. Do you speak quietly, too fast or too slow? How do you phrase your sentences? Is your grammar correct? Listen to well-known speakers or “Thought Leaders” like Brian Tracy, Bob Proctor, Jack Canfield and others on CD or DVD. Watch their body language and how they simply personify self-assured and assertiveness.

Notice the tone of their voices. Whether you’re a man or a women, find someone you admire who has the voice and attitude you’d like to master. In NLP or Neuro linguistic Programming (think Tony Robbins) you are taught to “match, model and mirror” a person or persons who personifies the kind of person you’d most like to emulate.

You may even consider a voice coach. It may only take a few sessions to learn how to breathe, change the tone of your voice to sound more commanding and it’s a lot faster if you want immediate gratification. Once you make a few changes in the way you sound and communicate, everyone around you may be in for a big shock at how much you’ve grown and admire you for going the extra mile toward self-improvement.

Keep in mind, a strong voice comes across as authoritative, credible, trustworthy and knowledgeable. A soft voice comes across as kind and friendly yet many times it is perceived as someone who is unsure and timid. And a soft voice does not give others the feeling that person is a Leader.

The pitch of a voice is very telling. Have you ever heard someone with a nasally, whiny voice? This may sound harsh, but most people are simply irritated by the sound of some people’s voices and even make fun of them. Of course that isn’t good or right but human nature is what it is.

Develop the sound, cadence and tone of your voice. If you have any doubt, make the changes suggested and be prepared to see your life transform.

Do you find yourself constantly saying you’re sorry to others because you are hyper-sensitive in believing you did something wrong or offended someone? Stop doing it. If someone is offended they will more likely than not let you know immediately, especially if they are one of those “assertive types.”

In addition, if you are always apologizing people will pick up the fact that you have no self-esteem and you may find yourself in the position of “convenient doormat.” There are people in the world who are very much like sharks in their temperament. Many of them could be someone with even a tiny bit of power as a boss or if they are extremely successful.

We’ve all run into them at one time or another, and like the shark, they can smell blood in the water. The office wimp will live a life of pure hell and won’t last long. No one has the desire to be the butt of the jokes from the office bully.

It’s astonishing how many people don’t even have a thought in their minds that changing things about themselves is not a bad or negative thing. If you have a junky car that screams; “LOSER,” when you drive it to work or even around town and people give you strange looks or write “wash me” on the hood when you’re in the local mall, wouldn’t you like to move into something that shows you look a little more successful than you do driving the old clunker?

From the way you speak, the way you dress and yes, to the car you drive will tell the world you are either on your way up, or on the way down, or perhaps you’ve always been “down.” Of course you don’t have to go overboard and put yourself deep in debt to make a good impression, but during this economic turn-down there are some great deals on cars out there. Finding your voice is more than how you speak. It’s about the whole package.

Changes happen in several ways. When you change the internal voice (your mind) then follow with the external (your behavior patterns) you begin to shift into another level of competence and the actions you take will put you on the road to success-maybe even in your new car.

Have you ever heard the expression; “Shift happens?” Yes, it was sort of “edited” from another less classy expression, yet it says a lot. Of course your mind is the machine that drives your body and your life but if necessary you can begin your transformation on the outside while at the same time begin the internal mind-work that can make your changes a permanent part of who you truly are.

You are unique, special and there is no one on earth just like you. Make it your goal to be the BEST YOU possible. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. Find your voice and ROAR!

What is Leadership? http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/what-is-leadership.html http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/what-is-leadership.html#comments Sat, 20 Aug 2011 17:06:21 +0000 Nick Cavalera http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/what-is-leadership.html Leadership is the ability possessed by some persons to motivate, guide & lead others. Those who are lead may have hidden abilities and potential which can only be realized under able leadership. This is similar to a child having the ability to sit, move, speak or walk but requiring someone to guide or lead him.

True leadership is helping people to achieve their full potential by giving them a purpose & direction.

The qualities of a Good Leader are:

Natural Ability: Some people are born leaders with a burning desire to forge a different path.
An example to follow: Good Leaders set great examples for others to follow.
Good leaders are good listeners: A good leader is not ashamed to seek suggestions from the people whom he leads. It improves participation and productivity.
Constant Improvement: Leadership qualities need constant refinements. A fine leader is always in the making.
Be one with the team: A leader should never stand aloof from his men. Encouraging those who come out with positive suggestions boosts their morale.
Encourage education & training: It is a truism that learning never ends. Constant education and training helps people to contribute to better team performance.
Never hide your mistakes: Only those who act can commit mistakes. The team greatly admires a leader who accepts his mistakes as a mark of true courage.
Tackle the bad apple: Do not allow a problem creator to get away. Tackle him immediately and firmly.
Celebrate each other’s success: Team members must be trained to appreciate and acknowledge each other’s achievement. Crab mentality where each pulls the other down must be avoided at all cost.
Motivation: An important way to motivate your team is to hold functions, give awards and generally recognize achievements of the team.
Awake abilities: A good leader conducts contests and competitions to bring out the latest talents and abilities of the team.
Expose: A good leader gives his team maximum exposure so that they gain experience and knowledge in all kinds of situations.

Leadership Theory – Quick Facts About Leadership Theories http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-theory-quick-facts-about-leadership-theories.html http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-theory-quick-facts-about-leadership-theories.html#comments Fri, 19 Aug 2011 05:10:19 +0000 Nick Cavalera http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-theory-quick-facts-about-leadership-theories.html Leadership theories can be distinguished between who gets to be a leader and a follower. There are quite a number of leadership theories, it is very important for an individual to understand each leadership theory and note how it affects their individual lives. Mentioned under are some these leadership theories.

The great man theory

This theory basically tries to imply that leadership is hereditary. It ries to show that regardless of what great leaders are born like that and not made. This theory makes leadership look more of a male affair and it was a theory that was used back in the day. Individuals who were born of a strong father figure were expected to live up to the same expectations.

The trait theory

This theory implies that individuals will always have the same traits of there hereditary fathers in them. This will generally border around personality and behavior. This is more like the great man theory although it has been witnessed that not all those who have this traits end up being leaders.

Contingency theory

This type of leadership is usually done depending on a particular environment. This will be done depending on what measures need to be taken. It will basically mean that leadership styles are different a good leader should know when to apply what style.

Situational theories

This theory just as the name implies will be done according to the situation an individuals finds themselves in. a good leader will be able to access the situation before they determine the type of leadership style to use.

Behavioral theories

Just like the great man theory this theory means that great leaders are born and that good leaders will always make decisions based on their personal intuition and how they feel about the situation they are in. it also tries to show however that individuals can learn how to behave through learning through training and observation.

Participative theories

This theory will try to incorporate all the members of an organization. It seeks to make evry body a part of making decisions in the organization. A good leader in this type of leadership will listen to all the employees before making the final decision.

Management theories

This type of leadership focuses on organization and group leadership. In this system employees are rewarded according to how they are performing in the organization. They are also in line for punishments according to their performances individually. This type of theory is aimed at making all individuals responsible and accountable for all of their actions in the organization.

Relationship theories

This leadership theory is based on how the leader works with his or her followers. This type of leadership makes the employees more productive as the leader will be focused on their individual growth. It helps build strong groups for collective success. Leaders in this type of leadership are usually very ethical and moral standards are supposed to be very high. This is because although the main aim is to ensure all individuals in this groups gets to grow .Leadership styles are different to all individuals and a good leader regardless of which type of leadership should have the power to know what will best suit his organization.

Academic Leadership Courses vs Online Leadership Courses http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/academic-leadership-courses-vs-online-leadership-courses.html http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/academic-leadership-courses-vs-online-leadership-courses.html#comments Thu, 18 Aug 2011 17:07:56 +0000 Nick Cavalera http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/academic-leadership-courses-vs-online-leadership-courses.html Leadership courses/classes/coaching comes in many names and forms, but the susbtance usually fits into one of 2 catergories:

1. Academic Leadership Courses

2. Experience or ‘Hands on’ Based Courses

The differences between the two are very stark: academic courses teach the theory surrounding leadership & management (as the skills needed for both can sometimes overlap). These will involved many leadership theories developed by professors and researchers using scientific methods, and drawing sensible conclusions from their results.

While I wouldn’t want to attack the work of these researchers – it is however important that we appreciate the weaknesses inherent within this strategy of learning.

Weakness 1 : Lack of reality. Sometimes experiments take place in very abstract and artificial settings.

They may help us learn and understand human behaviour, but however it is in linking these scientific results to practical approaches to leadership, where this type of leadership course falls down. Due to the rather contrieved settings – the results may simply not replicate in real life due to other factors that always exist in a business like setting.

Weakness 2: No development for the learner. Learning a theory is certainly not the same as being able to apply one. And in this sense: purely academic leadership courses do not even cover all the bases needed to effective improve the leadership (or ensure a marginal improvement) in an individual.

Experienced based courses can take the form of mentoring from within an organisation, or perhaps a real-life based case study for the participant of the course to take part in, such as in an MBA.

These courses are often those recommended by leading leadership experts, leadership consultants, leadership coaches and gurus. They receive this universal support, because practise-based leadership courses are certainly seen as the ‘premium’ or ’5 star’ way of developing your skills and improving your leadership potential.

Being able to work with someone one-on-one gives you a great attachment and commitment to your leadership course. Not wanting to let your mentor down, you will find that having someone above you, looking down upon your work will tremendously effect the amount of effort you put into it. I appreciate that you may see yourself as a very motivated individual – however the majority of us will still slack off less with a face-to-face leadership ooach.

A course that bases its learning points upon the individual mistakes or weaknesses in a participants actual activity is a great way to ensure that the potential-leader remembers and is able to apply the lessons learnt.

Experience based courses are however far more expensive than purely academic – the most convient of which; online leadership courses, can be avaliable for under 500, (although of course, the less you pay, the less you can expect).

In conclusion, chosing a leadership course or online leadership course is about balancing your own needs. Do you believe that you will be able to action advance leadership models on your own? Or do you believe that having a professional with oversight who will give feedback, will be able to better respond to your leadership development needs?

Leadership Attributes, Leadership Traits, and Transformational Leadership Research http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-attributes-leadership-traits-and-transformational-leadership-research.html http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-attributes-leadership-traits-and-transformational-leadership-research.html#comments Thu, 18 Aug 2011 05:06:10 +0000 Nick Cavalera http://www.personalleadershipdevelopmentskills.com/leadership-attributes-leadership-traits-and-transformational-leadership-research.html My doctoral dissertation leadership research primarily focused on the impact and relationship between leadership and adversity. However, a material additional component of my leadership was to evoke from the sixteen prominent leader’s descriptions their concepts of leadership, as well as their styles of leadership, including transformational leadership.

The sixteen prominent leader / research participants each had their own unique life journey in dealing with adversity and then working to become a successful and accomplished leader. One common theme is that obstacles or adversity in the early lives of the participants, such as the loss of a parent, poverty, discrimination, or even being a Holocaust victim, was not the seminal or most important event in their lives. They each grew through the experiences that came with increasing responsibilities in their careers, or through significant career changes.

Successfully overcoming the obstacles in their adult lives helped them to grow. The encouragement, guidance, and examples from mentors played a significant part in their lives.

My in depth Doctoral dissertation research into leadership and adversity has shown me that a mentor, especially a servant-leader mentor, can teach a person how to overcome the obstacles and adversities of life. Enlightened mentors or servant-leader mentors are a classic example of someone who uses transformation leadership techniques and skills in the life.

The leader I interviewed commented on the importance of being the enlightened and caring mentor can guide from their own personal experiences with adversity. They are some who has been there and has successfully overcome the difficult problem or major adversity.

In some cases, mentors may teach mentees which way to go based on their experience of taking a wrong path and having learned a better way. The mentor may have experienced and overcome some other, even more horrendous, difficulty in his or her life’s journey that could inspire the mentee to higher heights.

The sixteen prominent leaders that I personally interviewed identified nine important qualities of a leader. Many of these leadership traits, including though usually associated with transformational leadership, are found in the lst from my leadership research:

1. Honesty or integrity
2. A high level of people skills
3. Initiative, assertiveness, drive, or determination
4. Excellent communication skills or willingness to speak up, take a position, or take charge
5. Vision (being forward-looking)
6. Desire or passion to lead and inspire
7. Positive attitude and self-confidence; charisma
8. Knowledge of the business and/or group task at hand; competence
9. The ability to overcome adversity or obstacles

The sixteen prominent leaders that I interviewed for my Doctoral dissertation research into leadership and adversity specifically identified an additional four important qualities that are not commonly found in the academic leadership literature.
10. Being a Servant-Leader, serving people, and especially being humble
11. Having both religious faith and strong family ties
12. Framing or recognizing the worst adversity as an opportunity
13. Having a mentor or mentors in their development as leaders (Haller, 2008, pp. 116-117)

Several of my leadership research participants acknowledged the refining nature of adversity, but it was not really a “transformational leadership traits,” but rather a comment on their experience with overcoming adversity, obstacles, abuse, discrimination, death of a parent, or in one case the Nazi Holocaust.

Leadership Attributes or Traits, and Transformational Leadership
I have found from my personal leadership experience and my doctoral research in the area of leadership foundations, that transformational leadership especially important in the “real application” of leadership. Starting back in the 1980s there was a resurgence of researchers updating the academic literature with their findings, repackaging, and comments leadership trait theory. Many of the leadership scholars focused there framing on leadership traits in the context of discussing transformational leadership.

Review of Recent Research on Individual Traits or Attributes

My finding from my personal interviews and their answers to my questions on “What is Leadership” and “what help them become leaders” resulted in the list of 13 leadership traits I just listed from my leadership research with sixteen prominent leaders. Many of my thirteen leadership traits mentioned where often found in the leadership literature. The findings, re-naming and framing of trait theory and transformational, or situational leadership research was led by scholars such as, Austin, Blanchard, Johnson, Kouzes, Posner, Peters, Waterman and Zigarmi. Some authors commented on trait theory by adding their concept of “excellence” as the objective of leadership success. Much of the leadership theory research focused on the important effects of being a transformational leader.

A great number of the studies done on traits by researchers in the first half of the twentieth century used young children or high school/college students as their subjects, including Bass & Stogdill. Much of the research done on leadership traits after 1950 started to focused on business managers, major company CEOs, and recent college graduates entering management training programs in large firms..

By the second half of the twentieth century, the theory that leaders were “born” had been rejected by several major researchers, including Bennis , Gardner, and Kotter. Van Fleet and Yukl held that certain characteristics improved a leader’s chance of success and that those characteristics included initiative and fortitude.

Kouzes and Posner’s did extensive research identified respected and admired characteristics in leaders necessary to “make or build” a leader. Kouzes and Posner identified nineteen qualities or characteristics as being the most admired in leaders; which they claimed were consistent over decades of time and across six continents.

Their list of leadership trait list was consistent with my own leadership trait list. They started with “honest,” which was selected by 88% of the respondents. Their other top three traits were: (a) forward-looking, (b) competent, and (c) inspiring, and these concepts were found in my list of 13 Leadership Traits from my Doctoral research.

The comments and findings from my research into the foundations of leadership from the sixteen prominent leaders consistently stressed the importance of transformational leadership from my Doctroal dissertation research into leadership and adversity are consistent with the bulk of the leadership literature, but a material new element on the effects and impact of overcoming adversity and specifically the importance of transformational leadership.
