Self improvement is a top priority for people today. In business, employees who improve their skills improve their chances of promotion. In relationships, people are trying to connect with each by acquiring better communication skills. On a deeper level, we are all trying to take the reins of the future ourselves and control our destiny. It is not enough anymore to just be content with what is in our lives when we know knowledge is power. Today’s collective momentum is born out of a choice to live consciously. Life fulfillment can be found in being aware of the choices we make and the accountability we take towards those choices.

If the idea of going alone scares you, then consider joining a legitimate franchise with home businesses. Many organizations of this kind are always looking for healthy additions to their businesses.

The future looks positive for growth in the field. Our world is increasingly hungry for change, for growth and for complete control of our lives. We want spiritual enlightenment, physical and emotional well-being, and financial freedom. Humans are craving to feel complete in their lives. We are living new truths about ourselves. We are examining with a microscope our co-existence with others. Hungry for new information, people are actively seeking out these avenues. The demand for knowledge on self-improvement is insatiable. It is this field which provides those seeking with not only tools for change, but with inspiration and confidence. No other field exists today which can provide spirit renewal like personal development.

It doesn’t seem to matter what organization they work for, or the services, the client base or the economic climate.  We find that these individuals are in fact the top 3% of the professionals in their field.  In addition to learning to think as CEO’s, Presidents, entrepreneurial leaders of Business Development units, we’ve discovered they have acquired the behavioral characteristics of a leader. They have learned how to set strategic and operational objectives in putting together plans, how to be visionaries and see opportunities for their organizations that other individuals may miss, and in the role of Business Development, they have mastered the 12 Core Competencies, a benchmark to measure leaders.

To understand more about character development, we can reach back nearly 2500 years to the writings of Aristotle in Nicomachean Ethics.  Aristotle taught that moral virtue is acquired by practice.  Ethics, according to Aristotle, is moral virtue that comes about as a result of habit. Ethics has as its root ethike, formed by the slight variation of the word ethos (habit). Aristotle explained that moral virtues do not arise in us by nature; we must accept them, embrace them and perfect them by habit.

Leadership training emphasizes that understanding leader values and attributes is only the first step in development.  A leader must also embrace values and practice attributes, living them until they become a habit.  
In the Business Development role, success requires a fusion of who we are as an individual, along with our principles, values, ethics and their application.  It’s a unique combination of what we know, how we apply it and what we do.

Why you need a business plan!

Q: in the column last week gave advice on start-up and constantly preaching about writing a business plan. Own business, I do not have a plan, and I do the right thing. What is it?

And: How do you know that your company is doing, “fine” If you do not already have a business plan? It’s like a runner stating that is “fast” when its current pace.

Quality and success cannot be measured without scaling and objectives. The business plan allows you to compare the results, both in your goals. Without a plan is too easy on the bar for yourself.
